“In just one year, the James Webb Space Telescope has transformed humanity’s view of the cosmos, peering into dust clouds and seeing light from faraway corners of the universe for the very first time. The space observatory’s first glimpses of the universe included distant galaxies, the atmospheric composition of an exoplanet and a stellar nursery, where stars are born. The most powerful telescope ever sent to space, Webb launched on December 25, 2021, and NASA shared its first set of scintillating images on July 12, 2022. Our own Sun experienced a phase like this, long ago, and now we have the technology to see the beginning of another’s star’s story,” said Klaus Pontoppidan, Webb project scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland and research scientist at NASA, in a statement. “Webb’s image of Rho Ophiuchi allows us to witness a very brief period in the stellar lifecycle with new clarity. But if you could improve their clarity, using diffractive lenses instead of mirrors or refractive lenses would allow a space telescope to be much cheaper, lighter, and larger.Saturn’s rings shine in new Webb telescope photo Thin, simple diffractive lenses are notorious for their blurry images, so they have never been used in astronomical observatories. Today, similar diffractive lenses can be found in many small-sized consumer optics-from camera lenses to virtual reality headsets. The first such lenses were invented by the French scientist Augustin-Jean Fresnel in 1819 to provide lightweight lenses for lighthouses. A cleverly arranged pattern of steps and angles on a glass surface can form a diffractive lens. In contrast, diffraction is when light bends around corners and obstacles. Refraction is when light changes direction as it passes from one medium to another-it is the reason light bends when it enters water. To bypass this bottleneck, a few of us came up with the idea of revisiting an old technology called diffractive lenses.Ĭonventional lenses use refraction to focus light. In our discussions, we realized that a major bottleneck preventing the construction of more powerful telescopes is the challenge of making larger mirrors and getting them into orbit. In 2016, aerospace giant Northrop Grumman invited me and 14 other professors and NASA scientists-all experts on exoplanets and the search for extraterrestrial life-to Los Angeles to answer one question: What will exoplanet space telescopes look like in 50 years? These ambitious telescope projects are always expensive, laborious, and produce a single powerful-but very specialized-observatory. The next flagship telescope is not expected to fly before 2045 and is estimated to cost $11 billion. The James Webb Space Telescope cost more than $8 billion and took over 20 years to build. Because of these differences, it would be possible to launch many individual units into orbit and create a powerful network of telescopes. Our proposed telescope, the Nautilus Space Observatory, would replace large, heavy mirrors with a novel, thin lens that is much lighter, cheaper, and easier to produce than mirrored telescopes. For the last seven years, I have been co-leading a team that is developing a new kind of space telescope that could collect a hundred times more light than the James Webb Space Telescope, the biggest space telescope ever built.Īlmost all space telescopes, including Hubble and Webb, collect light using mirrors. I am an astronomer who studies astrobiology and planets around distant stars. To find the answer, astronomers will likely need more powerful telescopes than exist today. The grand question is whether any of these planets are home to life. They range between an hour and a half to a four hour drive from Washington, D.C. Most of the ski resorts in the state are located in the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains of Virginia. We are diving into each resort to find your perfect Virginia winter destination, where you, your friends and the whole family can have fun. Whether you are just getting started on the greens or love to hit a black diamond, there is the perfect Virginia ski resort out there for you. Ski resorts in Virginia offer a combined 16 miles of slopes and 18 ski lifts. Just don’t forget about Après ski, our favorite afternoon pastime at ski huts and lodges across the country. Naturally, lessons are always an option at the ski school, or you can go out with a trail guide to learn the slopes.įor those who would prefer the warmth of a fire, enjoy a weekend of fireside lounging in a luxurious lodge while being pampered in the resort spa. There are four Virginia resorts offer ski options for both the expert and novice skiers in your group. The Virginia ski areas are well groomed, even when they have to make snow, so you can experience the best of winter sports in the Mid-Atlantic region.Įven though many people want to stay inside during the cold weather, come out and face that chill head-on by enjoying a day or weekend of snowboarding, tubing or skiing at these all-season resorts. There is currently no lift service from the bottom of Thunder Jug.Virginia may not receive a lot of snow, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have some of the best ski resorts in Virginia and across the D.C. In 2021 Bryce opened its 2-acre terrain park named Thunder Jug which is accessible off Red Eye near Lift 2. Additionally, there are two carpet lifts on the lower slopes to cater to beginners. The entire mountain is accessible from either lift. Directly next to the airstrip is a dog park open year-round from dawn to dusk.īryce Resort has two quad-chair lifts, one installed in 2012 and the 2nd installed in 2022, which replaced a double-chair lift. The resort also features an airstrip with a 2,240-foot (683 m) runway, with the FAA identifier VG18. Summer activities include downhill mountain biking, which replaced ziplining down the slopes, golf, a driving range, a resort pool, disc golf, and an artificial lake, named Lake Laura. While alpine skiing and snowboarding are the most popular winter activities, the resort also offers an 800-foot-long (244 m) snow tubing run and an ice skating rink. Bryce Resort boasts one of the largest ski racing teams, with over 60 racers, in the Southern Alpine Racing Association (SARA) league. The resort was managed by brothers Horst and Manfred Locher until 1997 and is now managed by Ryan Locher.įacilities at Bryce include the main lodge with the Copper Kettle restaurant, a cafeteria (only open during ski season) inside the Shenandoah Center, an outside snack bar called Carter's Hutte, the Express Grill next to the pool, a full-service ski/bike rental and instruction operation, a ski shop and a golf shop. The 18-hole PGA Championship course offers challenges of trees and a creek that meanders throughout. Weather permitted, golf is played year-round. Due to the relatively temperate climate of northwestern Virginia, the resort relies considerably on artificial snowmaking, and was one of the first and only resorts in North America to introduce grass skiing during summer months though that activity is no longer supported. In December 2020 Bryce was rated one of the Top 25 family-friendly ski resorts in North America by Yelp. The ski area was opened as a year-round resort by Pete and Julie Brice in 1965, seeking to attract visitors drawn to the nearby Orkney Springs, and has been in operation ever since. Principal activities include skiing, golf, mountain activities, mountain biking, tennis, fishing, and water sports at Lake Laura and the resort pool. The resort is very popular with residents of the valley, as well as families and tourists from the Washington, D.C. The facility opened in 1965 and is located near the West Virginia border, 11 miles west of Mount Jackson, Virginia. 38☄9′03″N 78☄5′57″W / 38.81750°N 78.76583°W / 38.81750 -78.76583Īll trails except for White Lighting and Hangoverīryce Resort is a 400-acre member-owned resort the northern part of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley that is open to the public. His pixelated Damier print appeared on several bags as well, notably an oversized Alba bag. Many also carried calf leather monogram Speedy bags in bold primary colors, which Williams stated were inspired by the counterfeit versions sold on New York City’s infamous Canal Street. The models strode down the runway in a variety of on-trend shoes including chunky Mary-Janes, bedazzled loafers, and oversized lug-sole boots. Although the clothing of Williams’ first collection was unique and statement-making on its own, the bags and shoes that accompanied each look demonstrated that the new creative director also recognizes the importance of putting his own stamp on these products. Of course, Louis Vuitton is one of several luxury labels revered primarily for their iconic leather goods. Related How a Polish Aid Group is Making a Difference in Ukraine's War-Ravaged East However, by putting a Louis Vuitton house code that is not the principal in terms of brand association at the forefront of his first show, Williams not only demonstrated his willingness to dive deeper into the label’s history, but also prove his talent and creativity as a fashion designer. And, considering the longstanding and established Louis Vuitton brand identity, this is no mean feat. The fact that Williams chose to highlight the Damier pattern over the Damier Ebène demonstrates his clear intention to carve out a distinct place for himself in French house’s history. Ordinarily, when consumers think of the canon of Louis Vuitton house codes, the first one that typically comes to mind is the ubiquitous “LV” and quatrefoil logo pattern, called the “Damier Ebène.” Although Williams did use this motif a handful of times throughout the show, its appearances were sparse and nowhere near as frequent as those of the Damier checkerboard print. What is particularly intriguing about Williams’ transformation of the Damier print is his decision to make it the anchor of his collection. This digitized iteration of the historic motif appeared on numerous garments, accessories, and handbags in a slew of different colors and textiles. to create an updated, pixelated version of it. Perhaps the most notable of these was the “ Damier” print, which is, traditionally, the light and dark brown check pattern that typically adorns many of the label’s leather goods.įor his inaugural show, Williams made the Damier print the focal point and even joined forces with the American pixel artist known as E.T. The collection also saw Williams transforming long-established Louis Vuitton house codes for the modern era. Likewise, there were numerous instances of re-imagined suiting, with pearl-encrusted oversized trousers, pleated knee-length skirts, and cropped tweed blazers. This could be seen on several pieces, including Impressionist painting-printed leather coats, in both short and long variations, with the text “The Louis Vuitton Lovers Presents,” emblazoned across the front in a muted green font similar to that used on American paper currency. Comprised of 73 looks in total, it was undoubtedly imbued with Williams’ unique and effortlessly cool personal style. Despite the myriad of celebrity heavy-hitters lining the front row, the collection itself easily stood on its own. So are in-seat exercises such ankle circles, foot flexes, knee lifts and shoulder and neck rolls. Your practice of taking frequent walks through the cabin is recommended to all flyers. This is best achieved with regular movement. Lie-flat seats certainly make long flights more comfortable, but being prone doesn’t prevent blood clots. It also includes the compression socks your mother has asked you to use. Treatment focuses on medications to break up the clot and to prevent more clots. When DVT is suspected, immediate medical care is crucial. Shortness of breath, chest pain during a deep inhale and a cough that produces blood can be a sign that a clot has reached the lungs. It’s also possible for DVT to occur without noticeable symptoms. In those with darker skin tones, the skin may take on a purplish hue. In people with pale skin, this may look like reddening. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the effect of compression therapy on the perioperative course of an ankle fracture, with special focus on edema reduction, pain, ankle joint mobility, wound healing problems, length of stay (LOS) and time to surgery (TTS). Symptoms of DVT include swelling in the legs, tenderness, cramping or pain that is often located in the calf, unusual warmth in the leg and a darkening of skin color. When this occurs, it’s known as a pulmonary embolism. If they break free and enter the bloodstream, they can travel to the lungs, again blocking the flow of blood. That’s due to the potential for these clots to impede or even completely obstruct the flow of blood. Whatever the cause or physical location of DVT, it is dangerous. And while it’s true that older adults are at increased risk of DVT, it can happen at any age. Additional risk factors include anesthesia and surgery, being pregnant, being overweight, smoking, physical injury and a range of clotting disorders. This includes individuals required to spend long periods of time in bed, those with limited movement due to spinal injuries and passengers on long flights. While often associated with heart attack, stroke, cardiovascular disease and inflammation, DVT can also occur due to prolonged immobility. However, it’s possible for DVT to occur in the cerebral veins, which serve the brain the mesenteric veins, which are found in the abdomen and the veins of the arms. Most often, these types of clots form in the larger veins in the legs. It’s a condition that can occur when a blood clot develops in one of the veins that are, as the name says, found deeper inside the body. Am I really at risk?ĭear Reader: Your mother is concerned about deep vein thrombosis, often referred to simply as DVT. Plus, our company books lie-flat seats, and I always get up and walk around. It was tough, but that’s not happening this year,” Antetokounmpo told Yahoo Sports about getting upset with his coach’s decision to rest him periodically. Saying such a thing should acknowledge all of the other ways where Kidd’s presence could have easily derailed Antetokounmpo’s progress, such as telling him not to shoot threes or running his body into the ground, which brought on the knee injury and controversy that came about during the summer of 2017.įor Antetokounmpo, working and running through three-hour practices regularly to the point of pain was one that he was happy with at the time as he told Yahoo! Sports’ Chris Haynes the following earlier this season: That immediately gave hope to Antetokounmpo’s future as a superstar, and that’s exponentially grown over the last two seasons since the arrival of head coach Mike Budenholzer.Īs much as the Kidd era brought much distress and believe me, my co-site expert Adam McGee perfectly detailed those flaws and many shortcomings in this piece focusing on the period in the franchise, Kidd empowering Antetokounmpo to the degree that he did helped him find the path he’s on today. Strangely enough, that was largely the case as Kidd’s grand declarations didn’t become fully realized until midway through the 2015-16 season after the Bucks’ season was going nowhere fast and they were out of playoff contention. Also, remember when Giannis’ jumpshot looked like this?Įxperimenting with running your team’s offense, albeit in Summer League, through a 6’11” raw, lanky physical specimen like Giannis Antetokounmpo could have easily come off as some hyped up test run that never went anywhere. While he certainly took his lumps, such as compiling 18 turnovers in four games, seeing Antetokounmpo run wild up and down the floor and use minimal dribbles, his gangly set of limbs and primal explosiveness to throw down a dunk was only a continuation of seeing him play in the second division in Greece at that time. “As time goes on, I feel more comfortable.” “I did it like two years ago in Europe, but last year I didn’t do it at all,” Antetokounmpo said of his rookie season in Milwaukee. Grant Hill had a quick first step, but he was a point forward.”Īs Gardner later noted, taking on such a primary role directing the team’s offense was a refresher for Antetokounmpo in Vegas: But that’s what this time of the year is for, to understand Magic (Johnson) wasn’t fast. “A 19-year-old to a 30-year-old is a little different in understanding that. We slowly have started letting him have the ball and running the offense… “When you see a player’s comfort level with the ball - no matter what size - we wanted to see it in game action. Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel at the time: Still, the future remained bright for Antetokounmpo and the Bucks and not very long into getting the Bucks’ job, Kidd made his intentions loud and clear for the unique way he saw how Antetokounmpo could be weaponized.ĭuring Antetokounmpo’s run during the 2014 Summer League in Las Vegas, Kidd wanted to put the ball in the growing teenager’s hands as he told Charles F.
